AN ADAPTIVE REUSE CO-WORKING SPACE IN FLORENCE
Pergola takes inspiration from Gae Aulenti and 1960s Italian design to create a tiered biophilic coworking space emphasizing timelessness and sustainability.
The design adapts an existing restaurant located in the Santa Croce neighborhood of Florence into a functional workspace. The main feature of the space is the expanded inner courtyard featuring three tiered desking sections. The inspiration for the tiered design came from Gae Aulenti’s design for the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. The furniture and lighting throughout take inspiration from Aulenti and other mid-century Italian designers. Vintage and contemporary pieces blend with custom elements to create a balance of iconic history and modern technology. The warm neutral color palette gives the space a calming atmosphere that accentuates the greenery. Sustainability is considered in the materiality and sourcing of the design, with a relatively minimal palette that can be sourced locally from manufacturers or recycling programs.
